Kuala Lumpur: UEFA will contribute three renowned football medicine experts to the 5th AFC Medical Conference 2015 which will take place on April 2-4 in New Delhi, India.

The move is part of UEFA-AFC‘s continued partnership under their Memorandum of Understanding for 2014 – 2015 which has now extended to football medicine.

The experts are:

Prof. Jan Ekstrand (Sweden)
Professor Ekstrand is a medical doctor specialist in orthopaedic surgery. He is a Professor of Sports Medicine at the University of Linköping, Sweden, and First Vice President of the Medical Committee of UEFA. A former amateur football player, Professor Ekstrand has led UEFA injury studies and was the team physician of the Swedish national football team in 120 matches, including those in the 1994 FIFA World Cup where Sweden won third place.

He will make the following presentations/speak in the following:

  • Keynote on MSK Lesion – who is responsible
  • Lecture on UEFA Elite Club Injury Study – helping clubs to avoid injuries
  • Symposium on muscle injuries in football players and injuries when playing on artificial turf compared to playing on natural grass

Prof. Tim Meyer (Germany)
Prof. Meyer completed his MD and his MA in sport science at the Universities of Hanover and Göttingen, Germany. Prof. Meyer wrote his doctoral thesis about the therapeutical efficacy of endurance training in panic patients (1997). His habilitation thesis at the University of Saarland was about applications of gas exchange measurements (2006).

In 2007 he became chair of the Institute of Sports Medicine, University of Paderborn. In October 2008 he was called as chair of the Institute of Sports and Preventive Medicine of Saarland University.

Prof. Meyer’s main areas of research are clinical exercise physiology, recovery and training prescription with a special focus on football. Under his supervision, several training studies were conducted in elite and recreational athletes (altogether over 100 publications in internationally referenced peer-reviewed journals). Besides his university work, Meyer works as team physician for the German Football Association (DFB) since 2001 as part of the national squad’s medical service team.

Prof. Meyer will make the following presentations/speak in the following:

  • Keynote address on sudden cardiac and prevention of cardiac emergencies – the way forward
  • Lecture on measurement of fatigue and recovery needed
  • Symposium on measurement of fatigue

Dr Ian Beasley (UK)
Dr. Beasley is the Head of Medical Services to the England FA.

Dr. Beasley will make the following presentations/speak in the following:

  • Lecture on rehabilitation and return to play decisions
  • Symposium on preparation for tournaments abroad, ethical issues in professional football and assigning medical support.
